Gray’s School of Art at Robert Gordon University is one of the academic partners in Design in Action. Based in Aberdeen, Gray’s School of Art is leading on the food sector on behalf of the project. The food and drink sector is a key sector in the Scottish economy and home to a wide range of businesses. Within the sector, Gray’s School of Art is particularly interested in how design can be used as a strategic tool for innovation to help businesses grow. In 2013, Gray’s School of Art led a successful Chiasma which explored how artisan food producers could utilise design to innovate and build their business without losing sight of the unique nature of the produce. In addition to their work in the Chiasma, the team at Gray’s are conducting research into a range of topics of interest, including how open innovation can benefit small businesses and how collaboration occurs in the process of co-creation in design.
