Design in Action was delighted to support the launch of UAN, a new Chiasma®-funded business that has used natural Scottish sheep’s wool to create a luxury product range of cushions, pads, pillows and bedding, at this year’s Royal Highland Show in Ingliston.
The original idea came to UAN boss and founder, Julie Hermitage, after she attended our ‘Made in Scotland’ Chiasma in June 2013 and saw the business potential in producing woolen pillows to help alleviate symptoms of asthma and allergies, particularly as she saw the positive effect it had on her own children.
‘My own children showed significant improvement after we started using the wool for pillows. That inspired me to commission further research [supported by Design in Action] to investigate the natural antimicrobial properties within different Scottish breeds of wool.’ Julie said.
The Royal Highland Show, one of Scotland’s most iconic and enduring annual events which attracts over 170,000 visitors each year*, ran from 18th – 21st June and showcased award-winning livestock, the finest food & drink and rural living at its most vibrant. This made it an ideal setting to launch UAN, which took pride of place within the National Sheep Association tent and, following news coverage in The Courier, Herald and on STV News, sold a significant number of pillows across the four days.
Congratulations Julie and the rest of the UAN team!
