Design in Action, with support from Zero Waste Scotland, were delighted and honoured to host globally-renowned fashion designer and ‘Queen of Green’ (UK Vogue), Katharine Hamnett to speak at a number of events focused on promoting sustainable textiles and the circular economy.
Kicking off her whistle-stop tour of Scotland, Katharine joined the DiA ‘Circular by Design’ Chiasma event at the beautiful Dalmahoy Marriott Hotel and Country Club on Wednesday evening to deliver the keynote speech to a select group of participants who were there to ideate and create new products, processes or services that could encourage consumers to be less wasteful and more mindful of the circular economy.
Katharine’s approachable and informal style sparked a lively discussion between her and the group of designers, businesses and academics that covered everything from fashion to politics, injecting a verve into the group that lasted throughout the next two days of intensive idea creation.
The following day, Katharine delivered a passionate lunchtime lecture to a sold-out audience within the University of Dundee’s Dalhousie Building, after which she was joined by Design in Action’s Deputy Director, Michael Marra, who chaired a Q&A session with the ethical pioneer with a myriad of questions ranging from manufacturing queries to the power of the consumer to Margaret Thatcher and ‘that’ photo from the 1980s, all answered warmly and candidly by our highly-engaging guest.
Louise McGregor, Head of Market Development at Zero Waste Scotland, provided the vote of thanks and highlighted the benefits of having such a high-profile speaker advocate a topic that’s incredibly close to their (and DiA’s) heart; sustainability, the circular economy and a less wasteful future for everyone.
Design in Action and Zero Waste Scotland would like to thank everyone who attended either the Chiasma event or lunchtime lecture and, of course, Katharine herself for being so gracious and generous throughout her visit.
