Gray’s School of Art Winner: Emma Cantlay.
Emma Cantlay, BA (Hons) Fashion Design graduate is this year’s DiA Prize for Commercial Potential at Gray’s School of Art, RGU, for her collection ‘Transfer at Alexanderplatz’.
‘My graduate collection originally stemmed from an interest in maps’ Emma told us, ‘[and] when all six looks are assembled, the line running through them forms a route from the Berlin Subway map’.
‘Transfer at Alexanderplatz’, whilst heavily reminiscent of German underground travel, was also influenced by the map artist KP Brehmer and the collection is – according to Prof. Paul Harris, DiA Co-Investigator and Head of Gray’s School of Art who led the judging panel – ‘contemporary, wearable, functional, beautifully crafted, highly detailed and ready to go’ .
‘I’m really excited to have been awarded this!’ Emma said on receipt of her £500 prize, which is sponsored by Creative Scotland. ‘Design that is interesting yet commercial is something I strive to create [as] I believe everyone should be able to wear well-made and well-designed clothes every day of their lives.’
A sentiment that’s very dear to DiA’s heart. Congratulations Emma!
